Nicole Sullivan on the Tonight Show (July 11, 2000)

Version 1.0

Nicole Sullivan on The Tonight Show, July 11, 2000
Nicole Sullivan and her broken wrist on the Tonight Show.
Nicole Sullivan appeared on the Tonight Show on July 11, 2000. [Actually, since the show was delayed, the show aired July 12, 2000.] The segment ran about six minutes, and she discussed the following:

The anecdotes that are told when celebrities appear on talk shows are rarely heady stuff, and this was no exception. What made this appearance different from all other talk show appearances by Ms. Sullivan is that its content was pretty much determined when she made the fateful decision to ride a motorized skateboard at a Fourth of July party. The resulting injury was so conspicuous (she was wearing a cast) that it would seem akward not to discuss it. Although she may not have been technically DUI, she cited her having drunk two sangrias as a possible factor in the accident, and also admitted to having pulled rank (she mentioned that she was on a network show) to facilitate receiving medical treatment for her broken wrist. ["I was a little ashamed...but I did it anyway."] The rest of the segment was devoted to her discussing how she ran up $28,000 in debt on four different credit cards when she was a struggling actress. [At first I didn't think it was a lot of money, but then again, I doubt that I would have been extended that much credit when I was a student.] She discussed how the credit card company offered to pay/lower the minimum monthly payment in exchange for attendance at "credit counseling" seminars, which she cited as one of the worst places for a (then) twenty-two year old actress to be. What forces dictated that her credit problems should be a subject for the show remains mystery to me, but the segment as a whole was entertaining enough. The appearance also served as a plug for Mad TV as well as her newest project, Baby Blues, a project with which she has been associated with for over two years (and which apparently has been in the works for five years, making it almost as old as the WB itself), and which premieres on July 28, 2000. [The fact that she was mentioned in association with Mad suggests that the article stating that Ms. Sullivan is leaving the show in order to pursue other movie and TV projects may be in error.]

I wouldn't rank this as my favorite Nicole Sullivan TV appearance - I've seen better and I've seen worse - but this was quite acceptable fare. If one wanted to see Ms. Sullivan in a format where her natural comedic ability would flourish, one would have done well to wait for the July 17th episode of Talk Soup.
