Nicole Sullivan on The Tonight Show

"I'm just full of fun." - Nicole Sullivan on The Tonight Show, September 8, 1998

In case you missed it, Nicole Sullivan, actress/comedienne extraordinaire, was on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on Tuesday, September 8, 1998. The segment ran for about six minutes. In this segment, Ms. Sullivan discussed the following:

On the whole, I thought that this segment was much better than her recent (June 10, 1998) appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman because it was much more substantive and revealing. For example, at one point Ms. Sullivan spoke of her frustration in being an "out-of-work actress." This suggests that Nicole Sullivan has changed somewhat; whereas in the past she may have been content to bask in the glow of her new-found stardom, now she is somewhat disappointed that it has not led to a more prodigious level of stardom (yet!). She did not discuss the fact that her role in Futurama has been recast in favor of Katey Sagal, although this may have been a factor in her apparent disappointment. The part about Steve Young was essentially old hat to anyone who saw her opening monologue from the Mad TV episode originally aired on January 10, 1998, but even so was well-executed and provided a good prelude to a general discussion on football in which she reminisced about going to Irish pubs on Sundays with her father while growing up in New York City in the 1980's. Finally, the final part where she discusses her experiences in a spa demonstrated that Nicole Sullivan could possibly make it as a stand-up comic.

Here are some other revealing factoids which surfaced during the segment, in no particular order:

Airing only four days before the season premiere of Mad TV, this segment not only served as an adequate promotion for the TV series, but was actually thoroughly enjoyable. The interaction between Leno and Sullivan was quite animated, although Ms. Sullivan's slightly off-center sense of humor is what essentially carried the day. I admired the hell out of it.
